Annesi doğumdan sonra hemen ölmüş ve Mary, babası ile ikinci eşi tarafından büyütülmüştür. Çocukluğunun büyük bölümünü okuyarak, hikâyeler yazarak ve düşler kurarak geçiren Mary, 1814de Percy Bysshe Shelleyye âşık oldu. Evli bir adamla ilişki kurduğu için babası tarafından tepkiyle karşılanan Mary, 1814 yılında kendi üvey kızkardeşi Jane Clairmont ve Shelley ile birlikte kaçtı.
